The easiest gluten free New Year's Eve mocktail for kids here! So, fun and festive!
This post was published a while back, so I brought the words and photos back to life! Happy New Year!
Easy as pie, and fancy enough to make any child feel extra special on New Year's Eve. This recipe was developed by a nine and a six year old. It was grueling and time consuming. I'M KIDDING! It was a blast and it took no time at all. I wasn't joking about who developed this recipe, however. That is real. This mocktail for kids recipe is so fun and easy for kids to make, they can whip it up themselves. With no parent help at all.
The first thing you'll want to do is refrigerate those overripe bananas for awhile. Get them good and cold for the milkshakes you will be making. The second thing you'll want to do is get a really good, gluten-free ice cream that's thick. Vanilla bean works beautifully. Make sure the ice cream is softened so that it blends easily. So, take the ice cream out of the freezer first and let it soften a bit.
Don't, however, play wrestle tag for awhile and let the ice cream sit out and melt all over the counter. This what we did. This is not good. We had to put the ice cream back into the freezer just to harden it back up again. It didn't matter though. The kids liked the crystalized look and texture of it all. It's easy to alter recipes for anyone under ten years old. Period.
Once you've removed your ice cream and let it set out for a bit, get your ripened bananas. Your bananas should definitely be cold for this mocktail for kids. They should have a dark, blackish peel to them but still be light colored inside. The banana will be very soft and have a very sweet taste to it. That's when you know you've got excellent bananas for milkshakes! Mash those cold bananas up until they're gooey. You don't need to puree them or anything, but it will be easier for them to blend when you're mixing all your ingredients. If your ice cream is still too hard, just put the mashed bananas back in the fridge. Which by the way, is an excellent snack for a little one in a high chair!
Once your ice cream has softened, start scooping! My kids put in alot of ice cream! Now, my son could eat this with his favorite almond ice cream. It was a bit more airy, however. But he didn't mind! The kids really liked the way these looked and tasted but we actually put them right back in the freezer after blending. Once your milkshakes basically freeze over again, take them out and mash them up. You'll want to freeze the milkshake in the same stainless steel cup you used with the milkshake mixer. This way, it stays extra cold while freezing. You can even put the cup in the freezer empty, before you start making your milkshakes. Everything cold is what you want here.
My daughter loved the way these tasted, as did I. She described them as tasting more like ice cream. These are perfect for kiddos during a New Year's Eve party. You can fancy your frozen milkshakes up for kids by using martini glasses. Then, put a cinnamon stick right into the glass and top the treat with cinnamon and sugar. Show them how to grind the cinnamon sticks with a zest or spice grater, and let them do it themselves! They'll love it. If your Christmas decor is still up, find some tinsel! We had a gold piece of broken tinsel that came from our tree. We literally tore it apart. Laughing hysterically, of course. It looked so pretty and festive!
May your New Year be festive and fun and full of yummy things to eat and drink! If you've got kids at your party, grab a milk shake maker and simply let them have a ball. This mocktail for kids is so easy to make and not complicated at all. It will keep them busy so the adults can, well, be adults for awhile! Maybe the adults can make a batch of these after the kids go to bed! And maybe add a little extra kick (aka liqueur) to them if desired 😉
